Project: Insulate and Ventilate Refer
(click on any of the small pictures for a large one!)

Why

We had the refrierator pulled out anyway to help with the air conditioning install, so I thought it might be a good time to insulate the cabinet area, and install some ventilating fans to pull more air past the heat exchanger coils.

Plus, I had a lot of cheapo (Lowe's exterior house insulation 4 x 8 sheet, foil faced on one side, about 1" thick) insulating material left over from the salon roof, I thought I'd put it to some use instead of throwing it away.

Where

Did this while in the yard having the windows replaced.

The Job

It turned out that the area between the fridge and the cabinet sides was exactly two thicknesses of the insulating material I had. I just used construction glue and cut the panels to fit the sides, back and top.

There were two ventilation holes in the back wall that exited to a passive vent on the inside of the bulwark/side deck. I decided to put in a couple of muffin fans to help the air flow. I ran one to the 110VAC outlet that the fridge plugs into, and the other to the 12V tap on the fridge (110VAC and 12VDC fans, respectively).

Finally, I put some switches to turn off each of the fans just under the seat next to the fridge.

Results

I really don't have anything to compare the results to, because I did all of this before I put the boat in the water for the first time.

Anyway, for only about $20., it probably was worth the cost and time even if it only helps a little.
