Project: Hatch Holder
(click on any of the small pictures for a large one!)

Why

My forward hatch is a circa 1985 item and is not very user-friendly. I like to be able to just open and close without remember which way the tightening knob twists, where the notches are in the sliders, etc.

The Job

I measured the length of the exposed rod when the window was at two different levels that I thought would be most used.

I then cut a flat piece of aluminum the same width as the largest rod distance and then tapered the width down at the other end to the width of the smaller rod distance. A wide end and a narrow end.

I then bent the two ends into a "U" shape around a bolt that had the same diameter as the rod. A little de-burring with the wire wheel and....a piece of art!
(note the sexy background).

Here is the hatch holder in use.

You just push up the hatch and hook on whichever end you want!

Results

Hey, this works great!

It may sound a little silly doing all of this work to prop a hatch open, but this was just one of those things that bugged me - I am sure you have your own on your boat!
