Project: Mast Crutch
(click on any of the small pictures for a large one!)

Why
A "landing spot" for when the mast needs to be lowered.

The Job

Here is a picture of the wooden mast crutch. I laminated two pieces of 1/2 inch plywood together and then cut out the "holders" with the appropriate diameters. I allowed enough excess room for the carpet padding and some extra for movement when lining things up.

I used some trailer bunk carpet, after I put several coats of varnish on the whole thing.

I used two 1" clamps from the marine store that matched the diameter of my stanchions.

Here is the crutch installed on the stanchion. The boom is lowered into the lower slot, and the mast in the top. The way my mast base and gooseneck are allows for some angled alignment.

I had to carve out a bit of the wood at the stanchion base in order for the whole thing to sit solidly on the deck surface. You can see this in the top picture.

It beats the fender solution!
