Project: Emergency Swim Step Motor Mount
(click on any of the small pictures for a large one!)

Why

That small portion of peace-of-mind that comes from knowing you can mount your dinghy outboard on the swim step if needed. Never mind what everyone says about it not doing anything - it only costs $25.00!

The Job

I found a large galvanized bracket at Lowes that is used for bolting floating docks together. It looked beefy enough to hold my 4hp outboard. I would need two of them to be wide enough for the outboard's clamp.

I took a big hunk of Starboard and countersunk some holes to bolt the brackets on together.

I bought some galvanized straps, and some big galvanized bolts and wingnuts so that I could bolt it on the swim platform by hand.

Here is the bracket "installed" (I didn't put the bolts in for the picture).

My swim platform is slotted, so the position of the holes port and starboard didn't matter too much, but it just so happened that the slotted holes of the bracket were enough to cover the appropriate slots in the swim platform.

Results

Yeah, I know about the nay-sayers that a 4hp won't do you any good in a storm when your engine dies..... but for $25.00 it will get me back to somewhere on a calm day in the summer!

I haven't had a chance to run any speed numbers with that massive 4hp outboard yet, but stay tuned - I'll report back here.
