Project:
Transom Storage Compartments (click
on any of the small pictures for a large one!)
Why
While working on parts of the boat around the stern and also thinking
about needing some "outside" storage,
I thought of the wasted space between the inside and the outside hull
forms at the transom. Something needed to be done.
The
Job
I found these great hatch
doors on ebay going for $5.00 each.
They were very nearly the
same color as my gelcoat!
I cut out a hole in the transom
using the template provided in the hatch package.
I then built a box out of epoxy
coated louan panels and glassed them in between the two hull
layers. I measured and cut the panels to have a snug fit so
that I could construct the box right through the opening..
I sealed all of the corners
well with thickened epoxy. On the port side I drilled a small
hole at the lowest point of the compartment all the way through
to the outside of the transom. I then epoxied a small tube into
the hole sloping downward. This allows me to store my flammables
like propane and butane canisters in this locker at the very
back of the boat.
Here they are finished.
Flammables on the port side
with the vent overboard, and fishing tackle on the starboard
side.
Results
This was quite a bit of
work, but it sure is handy!
